The
Lunnaness croft is a combination of 9 crofts under one holding and is run
by Michael and Margaret Blance. The
total area is 213 ha. Registered
with SOPA (Membership no. 357), Lunnaness has been fully organic since
2002. Approximately 7 ha of
silage is grown, including 1 ha of Lupins.
The land is treated with no chemicals, only seaweed granules and
seaweed liquid extract – both being natural fertilisers.
There
is a pure Shetland flock of 341 breeding ewes, with this season 241 bred
with pure Shetland tups and 100 tupped with Hill North Country Cheviots.
The
area is registered under the Environmentally Sensitive Area Scheme.
There is an ‘L’ shaped Shelter Belt of approximately 0.25 acre
which contains a variety of trees, some with seeds which has encouraged a
wide variety of birds. Two
areas of wetland now have a vast number of wild flowers and grasses.
It also provides a large area habitat for common birds.
Sale
of the pure, organic Shetland lamb, ready packed for the consumer, has
built up over the past 2 years – starting at the local Farmers Market
with the various cuts of pure organic Shetland lamb, and now includes the
Shopping Centre in Lerwick, plus direct orders. The seasonality of this
lamb means that it is currently available from September until December. There are regular customers and the lamb is gaining a good
reputation for its excellent quality and taste. |
