Shetland Organic Producers' Group

Formed in August 2001, the Shetland Organic Producers' Group was set up to promote the organic movement in Shetland, and introduce people to the benefits of using local organic products.

Among the aims of the Group are:

  • to promote the production and marketing of existing Shetland organic produce
  • to promote the further development of organic production in Shetland
  • to gather experience and resources from within the membership
  • to generally provide assistance to members
  • to provide regular communication between membership.

At present there are seventeen members, ten of whom are involved in agricultural production, predominantly sheep. The majority of the current members are crofters, while a few are farmers.  Other members are engaged in organic trout, salmon and cod production and processing.

Most of the agricultural membership have now completed conversion and have 'full organic status', while others are currently in a 'simultaneous conversion' period.

There are also seventeen associate members who are interested in furthering the aims of the Group.
